About

Anthony Phan is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (License #113233) who has been license since June 2019. Anthony has been working in Mental Health for over 10 years providing mental health services for a variety of client from age 5 to 90 years old. During this time, Anthony noticed a need for a specific population of clients. Anthony has developed the skills and specialty in providing mental health services for clients who have developed symptoms of Depression from sports injury. The modality Anthony utilizes for Injury-Depression is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Person-Centered Therapy.

Anthony aspires to help clients who have been injured due to their own physical injury from playing sports, exercising, or work-injury, where symptoms of depression are most apparent. In going through his own personal journey, Anthony acknowledges the benefits of receiving psychotherapy to have symptoms of depression managed.

Anthony participated in MMA training and power-lifting training, where he utilize these activities as a stress reliever. Along with the endorphins, these activities provided a support system/friendships. When Anthony got a knee and shoulder injuries, Anthony notice symptoms of depression (sadness, isolation, irritability, anxiety, lack of sleep) increased  during this time. Anthony also acknowledge the lack of camaraderie since being injured means inability to participate in these activities with friends. Anthony received psychotherapy for the purpose of developing therapeutic tools to manage symptoms of depression, as well as receiving clarity in understanding his own journey in mental health. Anthony also noticed clients coming into psychotherapy whom have been injured and are facing similar barriers. Whether the physical injury were from work or from exercising, symptoms of depression were apparent amongst these clients.

The other 2 areas where Anthony have speciality and aspiration in providing support are clients whom are going through Food-Depression and Under-Achievement-Depression.

To elaborate, Food-Depression is when client develops depression in coming to a realization that they cannot eat the food they use to eat. Whether their metabolism had slowed down, developed food allergy, or aging/diabetes is a factor, clients developed symptoms of depression during these time.  However, with psychotherapy clients are able to manage symptoms of depression. Anthony utilize Person-Centered Therapy and ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy).

Lastly, over the course of Anthony’s career in Mental Health, Anthony had numerous clients whom developed clinical depression due to the belief and emotion of under-achieving (shame, embarrassment, regret, guilt, family disappointment). Whether they come to an age where they feel depress for not accomplishing their life goals or they have been scapegoated by their parents for not living up to expectation, client developed clinical depression in facing these life stressors on their own. In helping these clients, Anthony utilize ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) to assist client in increasing psychological flexibility. In utilizing this modality, Anthony noticed a decrease in symptoms of depression as well as increase in self-acceptance.
